A Day in the Galapagos Islands…

Galapagos
Wake up and step outside your room onto a deserted white sand beach as turquoise waves gently roll in.   Walk a few minutes into the tiny town center and get a cup of coffee as you talk with the café owner about her experience living here- in one of the most special places on earth- Isabela Island in the Galapagos Archipelago off the coast of Ecuador.

As the sleepy town comes to life, grab your flippers and mask and head out with your personal expedition guide to a secret snorkel spot, where you and your travel companions have all the time you want to swim with curious sea lions and spot penguins, angelfish, sea turtles, and even harmless white tipped sharks.  Explore the incredible underwater world of lava tunnels as you learn about the geology of the Galapagos and how that has impacted the evolution of the incredible array of animal and plant species here.

After you have had your fill of snorkeling, head back to the island for a delicious local lunch.  In the afternoon, rent bikes and explore the terrestrial reserves as your guide points out unique flora and fauna, and how they adapted in this extreme environment.  Make your way to the Wall of Tears, an incredible relic of the Galapagos’ time as a penal colony. Learn about the fascinating history of these islands- from Pirates’ hideouts to agricultural developments- and the struggle to balance the needs of the human residents with the preservation of some of the most important and fragile ecosystems on the planet.

After you bike back to town (watching out for wild giant tortoises that are liable to cross your path!), your guide will take you to meet one of the oldest residents of the Galapagos- a 96 year old survivor of the penal colony, who will share first hand his experience of life and change on this incredible island during the past 60 years.  With all the cruise ship crowds gone for the day, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant as you discuss tomorrow’s adventure- a horseback ride up to one of the largest volcanic craters in the world…
