Educational Travel– a growing field worldwide for schools, families, and individuals. In the world of educational travel, there are so many philosophies, goals, and motivations. We at Chill Expeditions would like to share ours. What does Educational Travel mean to Chill Expeditions? Why did CE owners Chill & Eddie leave classroom teaching jobs that they loved to take over and grow an Educational Travel Company? What draws our fantastic team from all backgrounds to dedicate themselves to providing the most in depth, life changing educational travel experiences possible? Here is what Carolyne, our Communications Director, former teacher & camp director, traveler, and mom has to say….
I am one of those people who looks at house after house as I drive around, and wonders what that house looks like on the inside. When I am on a car trip far-afield, and there is no city for miles and I see a house sitting all alone on the side of a mountain – I have the same type of intrigue. Only this time it goes beyond what the house looks like. What is it like to live here? What do these people do for work? How did they end up living on a mountainside, so far from any other towns or cities? As a teacher with a counseling degree this probably doesn’t surprise you. Of course I am interested in people.
Here’s what might surprise you: I lived in London for a full summer in my twenties and I still have no idea what it is like to be a Londoner, what sets them apart or makes them unique in their thinking, or what the daily life of a Londoner looks like. I went to Wimbledon; countless museums, parks, and pubs; I traveled by Tube… and yet I hardly met a soul all summer.
Years later I traveled to Costa Rica as a chaperone on a school trip. After two weeks, I left with a better understanding of the country, the culture, and the people than I gained in four-times that amount of time in London. In Costa Rica I had two local guides, round the clock, who became life-long friends of mine. We discussed everything under the sun in that 2 weeks and my eyes were opened to life in another culture. They introduced me to the restaurant owner where we ate, colorful local characters, the coffee grower who showed us around his sustainable farm. Even our van driver declared us all “his children” and invited us to look him up if any one of us was ever back in the country – bringing us to tears as he dropped us at the airport on the last day.
This introduction to Eco-Immersion inspired Carolyne to go beyond classroom teaching and help provide these wonderful experiences to students, families, and teachers. Experiences like Carolyne’s are what brings our team together and drives our passion for providing the most comprehensive eco-immersion journeys possible to our clients. Chill Expeditions journeys are not just educational vacations, but profound experiences- the result of passion, professionalism, service, and dedication from our team, because we truly believe- and have seen for ourselves- that eco-immersion travel can be life changing.
