We do Greece in a way nobody else does — getting off the beaten path and exploring unique areas.

Our emphasis is on Crete, where we fuse the ancient with the modern and engage students with incredible locals whose work is inspirational.

As the most populated island in Greece (and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean), Crete is a significant part of the country’s economic and cultural heritage. We dive deep into ecological, political, and cultural nuance by exploring rural areas of the island. You’ll become immersed in spectacularly situated villages where locals proudly share their traditions, generous spirit, and some of the greatest cuisine on the planet.

Crete is a small universe unto itself, with impressive mountainscapes, breathtaking beaches, and fertile valleys in between. This natural beauty is equaled only by the island’s rich history. Crete is the birthplace of the first advanced society on European soil, the Minoans, and many vestiges of this mysterious civilization still remain. Let’s do some exploring together and uncover a few ancient treasures!

A Day on Expedition in Greece

Day 7: Margharites-Anogeia (Crete)

Today we head over to the nearby town of Margharites, where you visit the pottery workshop of Giorgos, a friend of your guides. With guidance from Giorgos, students create Minoan inspired vessels of their own. We have lunch at a local “Taverna” then travel to the remote mountain village of Anogeia, one of the few places on Crete where pastoralism and traditional music are part of everyday life. Prepare for an incredible experience as you enjoy a lamb roast in a shepherd’s stone hut, built among the oak trees of the Psiloritis mountain range. After the circle, enjoy an unforgettable show of music and dancing from the shepherds before heading back to your lodge for a well-deserved rest!
